Mike. When grandpa called tonight my mind immediately went to the story of Jacob. Once an angel came to him as he rested near a stream called Jabbak. Jacob hung on to the angel violently. In his wrestle he sprung his thigh so as to make the angel stay. Almost at the darkest hour, near dawn, the angel asked to be released. Jacob agreed but only after His blessing could be given. The angel gave him a new name saying, "Your name shall no more be called Jacob but Israel. For you have struggled with God.” Jacob later called the place Peniel “the face of God” realizing what he had seen. This is your story too. You are a good dad. You have struggled with God; you have held His angel as hard as you could. And like Jacob you had to let go. But because of this you will forever be blessed. Love brother Greg

Avery came and went like the twinkling of a star: sweet, quiet and celestial. But somehow that twinkling has touched me in surprising ways when I never had the chance to meet her in person. I was surprised by how her plight weighed so heavily in my heart these last 5 weeks. I was surprised by the pain I felt to learn of her passing. I was equally surprised by a feeling of relief I felt knowing that her adoring parents will now begin the process of healing.

People of faith don’t like to ask the whys: Why someone so innocent? Why now? Why Avery? For some reason I can’t help but ask those questions knowing full well that they will never be answered. At least not in this life.

The better questions are the whats and hows: What do we learn from this? How can we see her again? How can we honor this precious one as we stumble our way through life?

Laura and Mike know the answers to these questions. Avery is still there. That twinkling is still felt in those soft quiet moments when you’re all done crying and the sense of loss has become dull.

Mike, I can’t thank you enough for the way you’ve taken care of my little sister in all this. Laura, I love you. We all love you. Avery will occupy a tender place in our hearts.

Goodbye (for a time) my sweet little niece. I hope I can keep it all together to see you at the next level.

Mike and Laura, thank you for sharing Avery's precious life with us. Heavenly Father knew that she only needed to be on the earth for a short time. He also knew that she needed to have strong and faithful parents who were able to give her the love and care that she needed. What a blessing it is to have eternal families and to know that you will be with Avery again some day. I cannot imagine going through something like this without that knowledge and hope.

It seems like trials like this only happen to the strongest and most faithful children of God. Our loving Heavenly Father knew that you would be strong enough to endure with faith and to be an example to those around you. Thank you again for sharing this experience with us. We pray that you will have the peace and comfort you will need in the coming days, weeks, months, and even years. We love you!!
